UK SPINE at Evidence Week. Tuesday 15th November, 9am - 12pm, Jubilee Room, Westminster
It is great to see Evidence Week return to Parliament to bring together MPs, researchers, and the public. Evidence Week in Westminster is an opportunity to bring together the public, researchers and parliamentarians to discuss how evidence is used in policymaking. Sense about Science has partnered with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) and London School of Economics to host Evidence Week at Westminster on 14-18 November 2022, bringing together MPs, researchers, and the public to discuss how the evidence used to make policy decisions is scrutinised. This year The UK SPINE is joining Sense about Science to present research on new methods to improve healthy ageing and address one of the great healthcare challenges on the 21st Century.
By 2050 25% of people in the UK will be aged 65 or over (ONS 2020). Despite increased lifespan, improvements to healthspan (healthy life years) are lagging. Many people are living in poor health for a substantial portion of their later years, suffering from multiple long term conditions, 83% have > 3 co-morbidities; > 70% 4 co-morbidities. By 2035, it is predicted that more than 65% of over 65s will be living with multiple conditions. This presents major challenges to healthcare systems which are organised to treat single conditions.
The challenge of an ageing population is increasingly being recognised by the UK government as a priority area, as demonstrated in November 2018 when it set the goal of an additional 5 healthy years by 2035. A focus which was reiterated in the 2021 Life Sciences Vision, when ageing was highlighted as one of the seven great healthcare challenges of focus.
